An overview to arthritis symptoms treatment
Arthritis is
frequently accompanied by joint pain. Joint is a place where two
different bones meet. Joint pain is referred to as arthralgia. There
are many forms of arthritis. They are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid
arthritis, gout, pseudo gout etc. the symptoms of arthritis are
swelling, redness, stiffness, pain, partial or total disablity of
the affected joint. For treatments of arthritis a combination of
NSAIDs, [ibuprofen or aspirin] and disease-modifying anti-rheumatic
drugs [DMARDs-methotrexate and sulfasalazine] are used. The NSAIDs
used for pain relief cause gastrointestinal bleeding. But a new
type of NSAID, cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors, [COX-2 inhibitors] helps
to cure arthritis with less stomach irritation. Enbrel is an exciting
breakthrough in the treatment of arthritis as it helps the patients
who have not responded to any of the other therapies. In addition,
Enbrel has been shown to be effective rheumatoid arthritis. One
side effect was reaction at injection site.
Remicade and
Enbrel show promise in treating rheumatoid arthritis. But Caution
is important when used in patients with a history of recurring infections.
Arava (leflunomide) is used as oral treatment that slows down the
progression arthritis. Three types of exercises are used in treatment
of arthritis. They are Range-of-motion-moving a joint as far as
it will comfortably go and then stretching it a little further to
increase and maintain joint mobility, decrease pain, and improve
joint function. These can be done daily, or at least every other
day. Strengthening-using muscles without moving joints to help increase
muscle strength and stabilize weak joints. These can be done daily,
or at least every other day, unless there is severe pain or swelling.
Endurance-aerobic exercises such as walking, swimming and bicycling
is to strengthen the heart and lungs and increase stamina. These
should be done for 20 to 30 minutes, three times a week, unless
there is severe pain or swelling. When compared to NSAIDS, exercise
produces good results.
