Basics of Bronchitis Symptoms TreatmentThe inflammation of the bronchi of the lung is called bronchitis. Due to this infection, the mucopurulent exudates are formed in the lung, which is called phlegm. Bronchitis can occur as a symptom of Tuberculosis. In Ayurveda, this disease is called as kasa roga. Kirimis or germs are considered as the prime culprit for this disease. But Ayurveda considers kasa roga is caused by digestive disturbances. Hence Ayurvedic physicians choose the medicaments that are correcting both lungs and stomach. The common symptom encountered in bronchitis is shortness of breath aggravated by exertion or mild activity. Other symptoms include cough with blood streaked sputum, fatigue, wheezing, ankle and feet swelling in both sides, reddish face, reddish cheeks , fever, sore throat and head ache. Acute bronchitis generally followed by viral infection whereas the chronic one will be a long term with productive cough. Cigarette smoking (active and passive infection) is the primary cause of bronchitis. Tulsi (Ocimum
sanctum) is the chief herbal medicine used in ayurveda for controlling
bronchitis. Water boiled with Tulsi is used to treat sore throat.
Sometimes this is used as gargle also. Vasaka (Adhatoda vasika)
is used to liquidate the sputum, which becomes thick and dry. Linseed
is also used in herbal remedy. A loose poultice of seeds can readily
be applied on the chest region to counteract the coughing. The counter
irritant effect of the linseed is pronounced by dusting the mustard
powder on it. A teaspoon full of powdered linseed is mixed in 360
ml of water and boiled until it becomes 180 ml. The tea can be taken
after sweetened it with sugar. Even children who are having bronchitis
can drink this tea. Eliminate known allergenic foods (for example,
eggs, milk, nuts, peanuts, and soy), food coloring, preservatives,
and additives. Thyme, eucalyptus, and pine oils can ease bronchial
spasm and thin mucus. Apply oil directly to skin, cover with a clean
soft cloth and plastic wrap.
